Empowerment: The Key to Safe, Productive Self-improvement

Over the years, at SEEK Safely we have always thought of our mission as having three fronts:
– the seekers
– the self-help providers
– the legislators.

When it comes to how we interact with seekers, it has mostly been about educating and sharing information–through our website, our podcast, social media, Jean and Ginny’s memoir.

But knowing that growth comes from within, it felt like there was space for something… more. More in-depth. More engaging. More impactful. We want to pull people in, invite them to have a dialogue with us and within themselves, to tap into that deeper place from which true transformation originates.

Because what we see over and over again in stories of people who have negative experiences with self-help, is seekers who lose themselves when they come into contact with unethical, dangerous, or even just ignorant self-help providers. As they are fully led by this other person or program, they drift away from their original goals, away from their values and the things that make them who they are.

How do we address that?

One day, I sat down and sketched out an idea. With input from other SEEK Board members (including more than one mental health professional), we honed this idea into the SEEK Safely Empowerment Compass. It is, by itself, a simple tool–four main concepts set around the four points of a compass. But with some instruction, discussion, and thought, it becomes a roadmap for how a seeker can maintain the essential position as the person in control of their own journey. The name says it all. Empowerment. Knowing that a process of growth and change always invites vulnerability, this tool is aimed at empowering seekers to be able to maintain the most essential parts of themselves, even as they reach for more.

I’m very proud of this little idea that has sprouted into much more, and I’m so excited to offer our Empowerment Compass Workshop on Saturday, February 22nd, hosted by me (Jean Brown) and SEEK friend Anne Peterson of iLumn8.
